In 1998, the first meeting of the international Augmented Reality community took place in San Francisco, USA. This so called IEEE Workshop on Augmented Reality (IWAR) laid the foundation for the today’s most important annual conference addressing scientific topics of Mixed and Augmented Reality. At almost the same time, the Asian community started in 1999 the International Symposium on Mixed Reality (ISMR) providing the today’s logo of the ISMAR conference.
After another ISMR meeting in Yokohama, Japan (2001), one further IWAR meeting in San Francisco, USA (1999) followed by two IEEE, ACM, and Eurographics International Symposiums on Augmented Reality (ISAR) in München, Germany (2000) and New York City, USA (2001) the committees of ISAR and IWAR decided to unite their communities to become the International Symposium on Mixed and Augmented Reality (ISMAR). The first joint symposium took place in Darmstadt, Germany (2002) followed by Tokyo, Japan (2003), Washington DC, USA (2004), Vienna, Austria (2005), Santa Barbara, CA, USA (2006), Nara, Japan (2007), Cambridge, UK (2008), Orlando, FL, USA (2009), Seoul, Korea (2010) and Basel, Switzerland (2011).
